Fiero Maintenance Tips'n'Tricks

"Ole Red" served me well for 10-3/4 years as a daily commuter car before being retired to "toy" status in the fall of 1996. He is still undergoing a thorough restoration back to showroom condition.

Ole Red took his first show trophy in April, 1998, at the spring Gateway Fiero Club show, the day before he sat for his portrait above.

Over the Labor Day weekend in 1998, he took first-in-class at the Midwest Regional All-Pontiac show in the stock Fiero class, his first trophy in a formally-judged show.

In April, 1999, he successfully defended his status by repeating as first-in-class at the Gateway Fiero Club show.

In addition to my full-sized Fiero, my son and I built a Pinewood Derby Fiero for his pack's design contest as part of the Pinewood Derby in January, 1998. We made some tradeoffs in the speed department in order to make the car look more realistic, so it finished only 8th out of 44 cars, but still a respectable showing. It did, however, meet our goal of winning the pack design contest, for "Best Modern Car" (post-1960).

Yes, the body really is wood. We took a slide of Ole Red and projected it on the side of the block and traced the profile. I did the rough cut on a band saw and then Nathan took over the final shaping and sanding. We worked together to put a nice finish (proper red color with clearcoat, mind you!) on it, using an airbrush to apply automotive lacquer. The car even got the same three-step Meguiar's cleaner/polish/wax treatment that I use on the real Fiero before shows!

In answer to your question...no, Fieros never came with wire wheels. However, one of the requirements for Pinewood Derby cars is that you use the official Cub Scout wheels and are not permitted to modify the "wire wheel" area. So much for authenticity!!

Brag department: Click here to see Nathan's trophy for "Li'l Red". It was really tough living with him when his Fiero took the first trophy in the family!!
