One of Rio de Janeiro's best-known landmarks is the statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain. The monument was built in the late 1920s by Heitor da Silva Costa, based on a project by French sculptor Paul Landowski. Corcovado Mountain rises 710 meters (over 2,300') above Rio. The statue itself is 38 meters (nearly 125') tall. Inside the base, you will find a small chapel.
