Tooth of Time, Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimmaron, NM

The Tooth of Time is the signature landmark for the Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimmaron, NM. As anyone who has heard the rangers' introduction knows, the Tooth is "an igneous intrusion of dacite prophyry formed in the Cenozoic era of the Tertiary Period between 25 and 40 million years ago."

Many crews plan their treks to either include a side hike to the Tooth or to end with a hike along the Tooth Ridge and down a seemingly interminable set of switchbacks to basecamp. Somehow, there is a certain cachet to this return path that more than outweighs the drudgery involved. Getting back to base under your own power just seems right after somewhere between 50 and 90 miles on the trail.

Both of the Troop 313 crews returned over the Tooth Ridge route in 2007 and we met up on top of the Tooth for the requisite crew photos. After sharing photo duties, I stuck around long enough to shoot the shots for this panorama. The USGS benchmark (much the worse for wear) is visible if you look straight down in the pan.

This panorama was shot with a Nikon D200 and 10.5 mm fisheye lens. It is composed of eight shots in portrait orientation, taken at 45 degree increments, plus a zenith shot to fill in the sky above and a hand-held nadir shot to fill in the area covered by the monopod below. To navigate within the panorama, press and hold the left mouse button. Moving the mouse up/down/right/left will shift the viewing window accordingly. Holding down the "Shift" key will zoom in; holding conw the "Ctrl" key will zoom out.

The panorama was taken July 28, 2007. It was stitched using PTGui and the high-resolution Quicktime cubic VR generated using the Pano2QTVR utility.

If you have the patience and bandwidth to download a 4-meg file, the Quicktime QTVR file will yield much higher resolution than the smaller PTViewer file above.
